Built around 1897 to serve the growing population of Mansfield, St.
Mark's is a vibrant Christian Church in the
DEANERY OF MANSFIELD
, the DIOCESE OF
SOUTHWELL AND NOTTINGHAM
, all part of the
CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
Our outreach is fuelled by our worship. This follows the high Anglican Catholic tradition, aided by a strong
CHOIR
(you may hear them on this link) and a full team of
ALTAR SERVERS
, and enhanced by beautiful
FLORAL DISPLAYS.
We always meet for Parish Eucharist at 9.30am on Sundays. This is followed by refreshments and the chance to catch up in the Hall.
Once a month, there is also the
FAIRTRADE
stall.
Every Thursday, Mass is said at 9.15am and each Tuesday at 7pm. These are simple, devotional services normally held in the
Lady Chapel. Try the tea/coffee with toast and marmalade after Thursday Mass most weeks! For dates of other worship, including Saints' Days services,
please see the
DIARY.
Our church family is led and encouraged by our
full time Parish Priest, Father George Butler, who is also Area
Dean. He would be delighted to
MEET YOU
and answer your questions. As well as hearing about the many aspects of
life at St. Mark's, you may wish to find out about baptism for a child or
adult (perhaps yourself!), or to enquire about a church wedding.
Our church family includes many young people. They are encouraged to join the
BOYS' BRIGADE
or the
BROWNIES AND GUIDES
, meeting during the week in the
HENLEY COMMUNITY HALL, next to the Church.
Most weeks at 9.30am Sunday Mass, the
YOUNG LIONS
leave the service for fun Christian learning in the adjoining hall. Some young people choose to join the
CHOIR
or the SERVING TEAM,
while others prefer to sit with the congregation.
From time to time
LIONHEARTS
happens for teenagers, combining interactive
Christian learning with recreation. Look out for worship organised by the young people, an experience not to be missed. All St. Mark's young people
enjoy extra trips and activities.
Young people who do not attend
regularly on Sundays are encouraged to find out what goes on in that
strange building on the corner! A popular and very busy event is the
Advent Craft Day. Also, schools regularly bring their pupils to the
Church for "hands on" religious education; the young people are full
of enthusiasm and thoroughly wear out Church members who direct
these noisy learning experiences! Schools also make use of the
Church for their own worship on special occasions, as well as joining us in advertised services. Father George is
often invited into local schools to speak with the pupils and take
assemblies.
Every so often, St. Mark's folk come together for a good
time as well as joining in novel
ways of raising money to help others. (How does a
SPONSORED SNORE
grab you? It means sleeping through the night under the stars in freezing temperatures! What about the
Muic Marathon which raised £11, shared bertween WaterAid and st Mark's Church?
The work of St. Mark's and the upkeep of the Church building and the Henley Community Hall require finance! We are
dependent on the generosity of local people to provide this. There is a regular giving scheme in which taxpayers are requested to allow
us to claim back tax. For one pound a week you may join the
100 CLUB
with the chance to win a monthly cash prize. Every Thursday, there is an
INDOOR CAR BOOT
sale in the Henley Community Hall to raise much needed funds. You may sell your own items on payment of five pounds for a table, or donate good for the
St. Mark's table, or just come along to browse, buy and enjoy a cup of tea and a sandwich in good company. If you would like some peace, the Church is open across the car park.
Through the generosity of St Mark's folk, many local and international organisations benefit. Please take a look at the
GIVING & RECEIVING
page.
In addition to this website, we keep up-to-date with the weekly
PEW SHEET,
available at each service, and the monthly
MARK MAG,
normally ready on the last Sunday of the month. Please regularly check up on the
NEWS AND EVENTS
page so you know what is happening.
