I think we would all agree that the
wonderful floral arrangements in church each week do a great
deal to enhance our worship. They complement the beauty of the
building, they provide a colourful backdrop for our own thoughts
and reflections and they remind us of the wonders of the natural
world. They are truly spiritual.
I think we would also agree that we often take church flowers for granted. We fail to think
about the loyal band of floral arrangers who give their time and talents each week to the glory of God.
So here are a few facts that will serve to remind us that flowers in church do not just happen.
There are two regular flower arrangers: Evelyn Cossey and Esther Vernon
They spend at least 4/5 hours each week on the flowers.
In setting up a display they need to:
- Decide on a design and work out what flowers are required
- Order and collect flowers and foliage from the florist/gardens
- 'Condition’ the flowers at home – trimming and soaking in water
- Prepare the containers and the mounting materials
- Assemble the displays in church
In addition they also tidy up
and water ‘old’ displays so that they will last for two weeks if possible.
Would you believe that there was so much to do?
All flowers are bought out of donations. This is cash given in memory of a loved one or for a special anniversary/occasion as
well as from specific congregation collections for major church festivals.
If you want to know more about flowers in church then speak to Evelyn or Esther. They would really appreciate
your interest. You might feel able to help out or to contribute to the flower fund.
