As Christians we are challenged to look after our neighbours and
those in need. At St Mark’s we try to take this seriously. Over
the last few years we have built a special link with the
Sherwood Street Day Centre (SSDC), our neighbours just round the
corner from the church.
The building comprises Sherwood Street Day Centre managed by
Framework Housing Association and also a quick access hostel
managed by the YMCA. Both aim to help the homeless and
vulnerably housed in Mansfield.
The Day Centre offers a range of services throughout the week.
These include a breakfast for rough sleepers, lunch and a time
to talk for other young homeless people, showering and laundry
facilities, access to medical services, drugs advice,
counselling and much more. Overall, staff there provide a very
supportive and welcoming environment for a significant group of
people in our town.
But – it all costs money and this is where the folk of St Mark’s
can be good neighbours. Each year we collect various items of
food, clothing and toiletries as well as several thousand pounds
from the annual BIG SNORE held on a winter's night in St. Mark's
car park. We meet with the staff regularly both at the Centre
and at St Mark’s and do what we can to help.
If you want more information about St Mark's involvement with any of Framework activities, get in touch with Pam Bishop using the
CONTACT page. Messages
will be passed on.
