In St MAcolyte (male)ark’s we have a team of servers at the Eucharist, Solemn Evensong and other main services.  Their role is to assist in the smooth running of the service and to symbolically illustrate how our worship today relates to biblical times. At the Eucharist, the service of the Last Supper, we have a team of 9 servers.  4 Acolytes or candle bearers, who light the way (although we do have electricity these days!) and 2 Crucifers who carry the cross, the sign of Jesus Christ.  The Thurifer provides sweet smelling incense around the church to ward off the flies and nasty smells, assisted by a Boat Boy or Girl who carries the incense in procession. Acolyte (female) Finally we have an MC - Master of Ceremonies whose job is to keep the service flowing, ringing bells at key parts of the service.

It is often said that we learn more if a talk is illustrated by visual aids and even more if we become involved in the teaching.  For those who have visited the Holy Land it is easy to imagine Jesus preaching to the people often in the open air and at night.

We currently have 17 servers who take it in turns for the various duties.  However we are always in need of more and would welcome anyone, male or female who would like to see what happens and to join the team.
